Thanks again to Thomas for organizing all this and thanks to everyone for participating.

I'm happy to go first, if that works for everyone. I'll be giving a paper on the epistemic condition for responsibility. So would this talk be the third Saturday in August? And when would the ECR members need the paper?

If anyone else was set on going first, I am definitely willing to go second or third -- I am currently moving so may have missed an email. But also happy to get things started.

Title of paper & talk: Messy Moral Ignorance

Looking forward to discussing more with you all!

Also, is there anyone who would like to take the other session for the first meeting?

Cheers,

Hello and happy day, everyone.

I am thrilled to share and work with you. Currently I am starting my PhD and I don't have a paper or talk yet to share with you. However, I have the commitment to read, comment and participate actively in the workshop.

I would like to go last, if that is ok with everyone, so that I have a little more time to work on my ideas for a paper or a talk.

Also, thanks to Daniel for being willing to give the first talk and share the first paper. I think that, since we are meeting on the third Saturday of August, we could read the paper on the first week of the month, to give time to others to propose papers or the second talk.

Does this work for everyone, specially for you, Daniel? I think that if you receive feedback on your paper that week, you can even use that for your talk.

Thanks again to Thomas and to everyone for the space, the opportunity and the work.

Regards,
Miguel Rotter

Thanks, Miguel. I would value your feedback and others' feedback, and I look forward to giving constructive comments on others' work.

Does August 20 at 1pm EST work for everyone?

I will wait to hear if anyone would like to take the other slot at the (proposed) August 20 meeting. I will also wait to hear if that meeting time works for others.

If that time works for you all, I would be happy to send a draft of the paper by Aug. 10.

Thanks for getting the ball rolling y'all! A couple more things:

1. How do people feel about having a Google Doc or something for signing up to present and post papers? Sign up would then be on a first-come first-serve basis, with the requirement that people not sign up twice until everyone has had an opportunity to present and/or post a paper. (Of course, if someone really wants to sign up for a certain week that is already taken because, e.g., they have a big talk coming up that they want to practice for, then they can personally email the person who has already signed up and ask them to switch.)

2. From the comments above, it sounds like the plan will be that we have a paper posted at the beginning of the first week of the month for comments and a talk given on the Saturday of the third week of the month, where the talk and the paper may or may not be the same? I like this plan! One thing to add: I think we should try to get comments to the person who is posting their paper that month by the *end* of the first week, so as to not drag the process on and on. *One exception*: If someone is both giving the talk and posting the associated paper that month, I think it makes sense to save posting the paper and giving comments for closer to the talk (as is going to happen this month).

How does all this sound? If it sounds good, I can go ahead and post a Google Doc with this information in a separate blog post.

Buongiorno!
I think a google doc is a great idea as a way to keep track of scheduling. How does everyone else feel? Has anyone volunteered yet?

I have a draft of a paper that could be put up on the blog for comments or given as a talk. I volunteer it for either and will do whatever works best for the group. Now I need to mention that I work at a grocery story on Saturdays so I have to leave right at 2pm on the 20th.

Glad to see this is coming together. I have never blogged before so this is quite new to me and I have to get use to this.
Ciao!

Hello to everyone!

First of all, thanks to Mikayla for suggesting the Google Doc, I think it would be a great idea. That way we can have a better idea of who is presenting a paper or giving a talk in which weeks and dates.

I am very excited to see this going forward and can't wait to read the first paper.

Have a nice week!

+1 for google docs idea

Daniel Coren

A sign-up sheet is a great idea, to keep everything organized (especially once we all start posting on this blog a lot). Thanks for suggesting it, Mikayla!

Nathan Biebel

Hello all! Great idea for the google doc, though I (I assume just like many many others) did not get an alert for any blog posts. I just happened to check because it seemed strange that nobody had said anything yet!

That said, it was my understanding that we do 2 talks per month, both on the same day (perhaps one person chairing for the other), and that we would ALSO do 1 paper per week. I had assumed the talk papers would be the same ones for that week during the month.

The reasoning for this, if I recall, was because the size of the group is such that if we do not do 2 talks per month then people will not get a chance to present a talk/paper verbally within a year, but if we do 2 per month each person may get to go even twice within a year. And 1 paper per week was just so that everyone has a chance to get a paper reviewed by their peers - whatever they happen to be working on (dissertation chapter, conference paper or what have you.

Is this correct? Not correct? This is the basic schema in Thomas's email, which was sent after the meeting.

Though, to be clear, we may want to switch this over to an email chain so that others are aware the discussion is happening and can contribute!

Adam Piovarchy

Hi Nathan, I think the plan was two talks, Daniel said above there's a second slot, it's just that no-one has volunteered for it yet. Likewise happy to do papers more frequently but may not be much point committing to every week if we don't collectively have enough papers - the google doc is now up so people can start listing papers that they have and hopefully we'll get ~4 / month

Alessandro

As someone who has never blogged before how do we post the paper for everyone to read? or are we emailing it?

Nathan Biebel

Adam: Right, I think 4 is the upper limit and I would also suggest that 2 of them be reserved for the two talks. And, of course, I doubt every one of us will be able to read and comment on every single paper every month. The idea, as I understand it, is that hopefully at least a few will have the time to get substantial comments and others will be able to get some quick thoughts in.

Alessandro: you should have received a link to create a typad account for the site that will give you access to create a post. When you create a new post you can upload a file for people to download and comment upon. I think that's best since a full paper length post would be a bit too difficult to commen on (for me anyway).

Alessandro Fiorello

Thank you Nathan. I did not know how to use my typepad to upload a paper.
